Education Opportunities for Young Children

Opportunities During Worship (2-5 year olds)
As children are getting their first tastes of church life, Highland offers a unique opportunity for children, ages two through five, to explore and experience what it means to worship. Parents are invited to bring their children upstairs immediately following the children’s time in the 11:00 a.m. worship service, to leave their children in the capable hands of Highlands teachers and volunteers so that their children may participate in these opportunities.

  • Worship Storytime, for children ages 2-3, utilizes the time following the children’s time to help children hear the biblical story and connect through art and play. Storytime takes place on the third floor of the education wing, in Room 300.

  • The Children & Worship program, a Montessori style of classroom for children ages 4 and 5, helps the children through the movements of worship as it prepares them to participate in the worship service when they reach first grade. Children and Worship takes place on the third floor of the education wing, in Room 301.

Church School for Pre-Schoolers
  • Highland provides a safe and nurturing atmosphere for our children to experience during church school on Sunday mornings, 9:30–10:30 a.m.  A nursery for infants and toddlers is located on the first floor near the Magnolia Street entrance and is staffed by a paid nursery worker and caring and concerned adult and youth members. The caregivers in these rooms mirror and model the small child's first images of God, so this role is highly valued.

  • Highland's children, age two through four, follow the Wee Believe curriculum developed by Presbyterian Publishers.  The class for 2–4 year olds is located on the third floor of the Education Wing near the Cloverdale Avenue entrance in Room 301.
