First visit to Highland? Here are some answers to frequently asked questions:
Where are you located?
- For directions to the church, please click here.
Where do I park?
Parking is available in the following areas:
- In the large lot in front of the Activity Building, across the street from the Sanctuary on Cloverdale Avenue.
- Limited parking along the two main roads that border the church: Magnolia Street. and Cloverdale Avenue, including several spaces for those with limited mobility
- In the small lot near the corner of Cloverdale Avenue. and Oakwood Drive.
Where do I go when I get there?
The main entrance to the Sanctuary is through the front doors near the large slate patio. For those with limited mobility, there is a ramp toward the right side of the patio with a right side door entrance. There are greeters and ushers at the doors who are glad to answer any questions you may have once you arrive. There is also a visitors’ welcome table in the Narthex (the area inside the front doors) that has information about Highland as well as a free Highland mug for you to take home.
Are there rules about Communion?
You don’t have to be Presbyterian to share in the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper (also known as communion or the Eucharist). We share this sacramental meal on the first Sunday of every month as well as on other special occasions throughout the year. During the worship service, Communion is usually served by intinction, in which worshipers come to the front of the Sanctuary, take a piece of bread, dip it in the juice, eat it, then return to their seats. There is a gluten free, nut free bread option.
Are non-Presbyterians welcome?
Absolutely! Most of Highland’s members were something other than Presbyterian at some point in their lives. While membership at Highland is open to anyone who affirms faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, anyone can join us for worship, or for any of our other opportunities for learning and serving together.
What if I have nursery-aged children?
- Highland always seeks to provide members and visitors with safe, secure, dependable childcare. Our Infant and Toddler Nurseries are located in the Education Wing near the Magnolia entrance, on the first and main floors. An elevator offers safe and convenient access to all floors for our members and friends using strollers. During the school year, we offer infant (12 months and younger) and toddler (younger than three) care during the education hour, 9:30–10:30 a.m., and during the worship service, 11:00–12:00 noon. During the summer, childcare is available during the 10:00 a.m. worship service. Children up to age five are welcome in Room 112 located on the first floor near the Chapel. During worship we also offer a room for Children & Parents, Room 216, which is a friendly childcare space near the Sanctuary where parents can tend to the needs of their child and still share in the livestreamed service.
- Highland’s Nursery Staff – Judy Parro serves as the Nursery Staff person for our Preschool Nursery as well as floating where needed during the Education Hour on Sunday mornings.
- Highland has an updated, Session-approved policy for protecting our, children, youth, vulnerable adults, and all those who care for them: Child, Youth, and Vulnerable Adult Protection Policy (CYVAPP)
